David Makin

World Barista Championship 2008

The top 51 baristas from around the world competed in the 2008 World Baristas championships.

Equal proudly supported Australian barista champion, David Makin who was runner up to Ireland’s Stephen Morrissey in this year’s championship in Denmark.

This was an exceptional achievement for David and the Australian team as over 4500 baristas around the world competed to get to the top 51 positions.

The team at Equal would like to congratulate David on a job well done.

The 2009 World Barista championship will be held 16 – 19 April at Atlanta, Georgia USA.

2007 saw the 2nd inaugural Equal Golden Bean Roaster’s Competition in the coastal town of Port Macquarie. With over 380 coffees for tasting, it is now the biggest coffee roasters’ competition in the southern hemisphere.

The overall winner was Arabica Coffee, from Queensland. Other category winners included Coffeesnobs.com.au for best filter coffee, Art of Espresso — Caffe Royale for best retail coffee, Hennessy Coffee for best milk based, Bun Coffee for number 1 espresso and Beans Coffee Roastery (Beans & Bagels) for best organic filter.

The Equal Golden Bean has been a huge success for the coffee industry and the praise for this style of event has been positive.

Equal will again be proudly supporting the event in late 2008 at the beautiful coastal town of Port Macquarie.

This year the 3 day event will kick off with a welcoming Cocktail Event. Over the weekend 360 coffees will be under the tongue, tasted and tested by industry judges to find Australia’s best Aussie coffee roaster.

The six categories to be judged include Australian Grown, Espresso, Milk Based, Organic, Retail and Filter.

Also included in the program will be a special guest speaker and many free exciting workshops. An awards dinner will conclude The Equal Golden Bean Roaster Competition where we’ll find out who has taken out the title of Australia’s best coffee roaster.
