Putting Low-Calorie Sweeteners in Perspective

DAA National Conference Gold Coast - Queensland from 29-31 May 2008

Improving Nutrition, a social responsibility

The annual DAA Conference brought together leading nutritionists and dietitians from around Australia and the globe to discuss the latest trends and science in nutrition. This year the conference program was designed to explore the theme of Improving Nutrition - A Social Responsibility.

With obesity rates in Australia doubling over the past 20 years the need to understand the problem and potential dietary strategies to tackle the issue are greater than ever before. Although not a magic bullet, low-calorie sweeteners can help people reduce their energy intakes and can play a positive role in helping address the growing incidence of this issue.

At an early morning breakfast seminar, visiting international speaker Dr Ruth Kava, Director of Nutrition for the American Council on Health & Science, discussed the role of low-calorie sweeteners, such as Equal, in a calorie controlled diet. She presented a compelling overview of the science on all low-calorie sweeteners including their efficacy, their safety and their role in everyday diet and lifestyle. While enjoying a healthy, nutritious breakfast of Equal banana bread and fresh fruit, guests learnt about the significant contribution low calorie sweeteners can make to weight control and disease management, including diabetes.
